2009 Walchensee Moth Open
12 Moths form 5 Nations attended the Walchensee Moth Open in Southern Germany. They were rewarded
with sunshine that generated good thermal winds on flat water. Walchensee is a
beautiful lake 800 meters high and 180 meters deep. It is full of clear drinkable water and
surrounded by high mountains. The sailing club was very friendly and managed to get 4 races
in the good wind between flat calm conditions and thunderstorms.
On day one there was close racing for the 3 races. Sven was fast but challenged by Christian and
Martin. Martin managed to get one win in his beautifully built home build.
We shared the race course with 2 fleets of keel boats that lead to some interesting mark roundings
and added a new dimension to the tactics or in some cases spectacular crashes... While hiking my
gusts out I did envy the comfortable chairs that were mounted over the side of some of theses boats.
The first day of racing took its toll on 3 boats and the "Fuerware Fest" took its toll on some
sailors who were a bit slow to rig after only a few ours sleep. Again close racing saw Sven take
his 3rd win from Doug who was chasing hard and about 4 seconds behind at the finish.
This experimental event at Walchensee had a higher than expected turnout and so hopefully we will
be allowed back again to Daniel's home club. Walchensee is like a mini Garda and well worth the
drive so I hope to see more Moths enjoying this event next year.
