David,

it's not the speed that thrills, it's the acceleration. Moths and especially Lowriders are not easy to sail but extremely rewarding boats. Especially getting downwinds in a blow can be a handful.
Speed can be up to 14 - 16 kts.

Cheers,
Burkh
Hi Jerome,

either get in touch with the Swiss Moth Assoc. or travel to Mar Menor in Spain, there are some Bladeriders at Pro Vela's:

Best thing to start with is borrowing a foiler somewhere. If you have the choice of boats a modern, well set up foiler would be best as they are the easiest to sail.
If you have to travel hundres of km to try a boat, do it. Even getting on a plane just for trying the Moth would be worth the money. (I don't knwo where you're from and I was told that there are countries in the world where the Moth is unknown. I think that's a legend though)

If climbing on board the boat, swimming and eventually sailing in a straight line and foiling are fine for you start talking to Moth sailors as much as possible.
Given your budget is sufficient I'd recommend to buy a good boat second hand. Go out sailing as much as possible and don't stop talking to other Mothies.

Joey,

This is a brilliant idea! I built several Moths on my own an enjoyed each time very much. However, to save you from some of my early mistakes I'd recommend as follows:

1. Try a Moth
2. Join the IMCA or your national assoc.
3. Buy a cheap second hand Moth just to take you our on the water and go to as many regattas as possible. Experience in sailing a moth is crucial if you want to build one.
4. Talk to as many Mothies as possible.
5. Build your first Moth.
6. Learn from your mistakes
7. Build your second boat.

Forget advice from established boatbuilders (other than Moths), your boat would be most probably far too heavy.
Building on your own is more expensive than buying second hand.

I am a bit disappointed that there has not been much activity here. Maybe there are enough forums out there already...

Just wait and see, Doug! The Forum is a great idea but! It just seems that everyone ist still used to post and read in other forums so that it may take some time until this becomes the central hub of the class.

This is a "Speedy" Moth. The only GRP moth series ever built in Germany by the yard "Primaboot" located in Aachen. Judging by the sailno. the boat was built in the late 70s early 80s.

I tried one once. there are FAR better Moths... and have ever been. If you think that this design is as young as the Womble III or Magnum Mk2 design. We were a bit behind, even in those days..
