I am looking at buying a moth. I can't afford a foiler so want to start with a low rider, I would like one that I could convert at a later date. I have seen a Magnum 9 and a Ghoul2, which of these boats would be more suitable. I think the Magnum 9 is made from plywood but i am a carpenter & joinery by trade so this dosn't scare me

Problem with some of the older boats is the strength. Foilers need more strength because the loads on them are more. Wood alone will not be enough so you will have to do carbon patches to strengthen key areas for both boats.
So if you want to convert it later take the stronger one but expect to have to learn carbon work, which for a carpenter should be not problem once you get the hang of it.
The smaller one will also be more modern for a foiler, unless you want to do a Carbon footprint type project where you cut the deck off.
